For sale, a signed first edition John Steinbeck, ''The Red Pony'' - Published by Covici Friede Publishers in September of 1937, this First edition was limited to 699 copies, signed by the author - this one being number 645 out of 699 (see picture below). Printed on handmade paper by the Pynson Printers, New York, under the supervision of Elmer Adler. Vignette of a pony in red and gray on title page. John Steinbecks' autograph is on the back of page 81 (which is the last page of the book). That page reads as follows:
''Of The Red Pony by John Steinbeck, set in monotype Italian Oldstyle and printed on Handmade La Garde paper, there were six hundred and ninety-nine numbered copies by the Pynson Printers of New York under the supervision of Elmer Adler, each copy signed by the author, this being number 645''
The number 645 is handwritten in red ink and Steinbeck signed it under this in black ink.
CONDITION - A fine copy Original beige cloth. Front cover, spine and back intersected by eight vertical and five horizontal gray rules. Vignette of a pony in red repeated from the title-page on front cover, with date in red roman numerals below. Spine very lightly browned. Housed in the original slipcase, which is slightly browned at edges. A letter stating what the book is and the condition from the Heritage Book Shop in Los Angeles, California comes with the book. The Heritage Book Shop (on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles) specializes in rare books such as this one.
